The announcement text: Employment of an information professional

The key to the resolution of all the issues described in this report is the employment of a suitably qualified information professional. The ideal candidate should have a BA*BSc, MA*MSc or Diploma in Library and Information Management * Science and be a member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). Information management is a technical skill and, given the scale of the issues , it is not a role that can be tacked on to any existing post within the organisation.

The key responsibilities of an Information Manager will be:-

• To develop a thesaurus of subject descriptors for each area of work
• To develop appropriate file structures for application within computerised and manual systems
• To work with others in the organisation to implement and manage these file structures
• To work with others to develop document templates and guidelines for their use, to include structure, content, ascription of keywords and filing
• To develop and implement acquisitions, disposals and archive policies for the library and for the information resources of the organisation as a whole
• To develop a classification scheme for the resources held in the library
• To catalogue the library resources and make them accessible to others
• To take responsibility for all journal subscriptions and the circulation of journals to relevant staff
• To work with others and to assist in the integration of various databases within the organisation
